This state is one of the first "Bandito" states we travelled through. Marijuana growing is apparently quite extensive in this state and this attracts a somewhat less than savory crowd.
This is also the state where we got robbed while camping overnight
on a beach with Jen & Rich.
We found them on an otherwise desserted beach and decided to camp there if they did also.
Jen told me later that when our van first drove up she had some trepidation that we'd be a couple of pot-smoking gringo surfers and would be insufferable to camp with, but as soon as I stepped out of the van and opened my mouth she inwardly exclaimed, "A Fag! Oh, thank god!". I was quite bemused by that. She told me that up until a year previous she considered herself strictly lesbian but now since being with Rich for a year (who we agreed had many fine gay qualities even though he wasn't gay) now considered herself bisexual. They were both really great people.
We built a fire on the beach after it got dark and roasted our dinner. While dinner was roasting we played Chess, Gin and Casino. Then we ate dinner and lounged under the stars drinking tequila until it was quite late. It was a wonderful evening. The next morning I discovered that about $60 was missing from my wallet that had been left in the unlocked van while we were on the beach. I suspect some local kid crept up in the dark while we were on the beach and stole the money.
I went to the local police in the next little town and they acted like this was the first time anyone had ever reported a petty theft to them and they didn't quite know what to do about it.
The next night we camped in the safer surroundings of a nearby surfer community called Rio Nix. Unfortunately that night I got sick for the first time in Mexico and spent the entire night throwing up (nope, I don't have any pictures of that).
The next morning I was weak but felling better. We took off for points farther south... Next, on to the state of Guererro...
