We ended up staying in Melaque for a week. Each morning I would
get up, get dressed, grab my backpack & sunhat, and head to
the mercado (market).
First I would get a jugo (a fruit smoothy) from Maria who worked
in one of the better jugo joints, Loncheria Mar y Sol (Sea &
Sun Refreshments).
I would sit on a stool and slowly drink my Naranja, Mazana, y Platano Jugo (orange, apple, and banana smoothie) while watching people come and go from the other shops in the mercado.
Then I would wonder over to my favorite stall to buy vegetables.
It was run by an old Mexican woman who used crutches to hobble
around her stand. Her vegetable were always fresh, washed, and
very inexpensive. I could buy a large bag of vegetables from her
stand for less than 6 pesos (less than a dollar).
When I got back home with the groceries for the day I would
head down to the beach for the morning swim.
I would usually go swimming three times a day or more. After
the morning swim was lunch time and then a bit of a lie-down in
the hammocks.
In the afternoon we would sometimes ride our bikes over to
the nearby town of Barre de Navidad where the summer home of the
President of Mexico sits in splendor on the end of a peninsula.
Or sometimes we would go snorkeling off the point or hiking
in the hills above Bahia de Navidad (Christmas Bay).
Melaque was certainly the town in Mexico that I fell in love with and would love to return to the next time I go to Mexico.
